NEC LCD Technologies to Launch Three New QVGA LCDs Ideal for Portable Movie Playing Use

Tokyo, February 23, 2006 --- NEC LCD Technologies, Ltd. today announced that it will begin shipping samples of three new, quarter video graphic array (QVGA), amorphous silicon thin-film-transistor (TFT) liquid crystal displays (LCDs) by the end of April 2006. All three new displays realize low power consumption, an extremely important factor for mobile terminals, while boasting high brightness, enabled by the optimum design between the LCD panel and backlight system. As the new products also achieve a quick response time of 23 milliseconds (ms), the fastest in the category of color TFT LCD modules for mobile terminal use, and are optimized for landscape viewing, they are ideal for portable movie playing use.

The main features of the three new models are as follows:

1. Model No. NL2432HC22-37B: 3.5-Inch (8.9cm Diagonal) QVGA TFT LCD
   • Achieves a high brightness of 350cd/m2, the highest in the category of color TFT LCD modules for mobile terminal use, in addition to realizing a low power consumption of 320mW, enabled by the optimum design between the LCD panel and back-light system.
   • Enables the clear and vivid reproduction of high-quality video images as it boasts a remarkably fast response time of 23ms, the fastest in the category of color TFT LCD modules for mobile terminal use.
   • Equipped with a touch panel, which rapidly increases its demand for use in mobile terminals, it also offers many benefits for manufacturers of mobile terminals in terms of reduced development costs and shorter lead time.
2. Model No. NL2432HC17-02A: 2.7-Inch (6.8cm Diagonal) QVGA TFT LCD
   • Realizes low power consumption of 200mW, while also simultaneously boasting a high brightness of 200cd/m2 and a high contrast ratio of 400:1, the highest ratio level in the category of color TFT LCD modules for mobile terminal use.
   • Enables the clear and vivid reproduction of high-quality video images as it boasts a remarkably fast response time of 23ms, the fastest in the category of color TFT LCD modules for mobile terminal use.
3. Model No. NL2432HC17-02B: 2.7-Inch (6.8cm Diagonal) QVGA TFT LCD
   • Realizes low power consumption of 200mW, while also simultaneously boasting a touch panel, a high brightness of 180cd/m2 and a high contrast ratio of 400:1, the highest ratio level in the category of color TFT LCD modules for mobile terminal use.
   • Enables the clear and vivid reproduction of high-quality video images as it boasts a remarkably fast response time of 23ms, the fastest in the category of color TFT LCD modules for mobile terminal use.
   • Equipped with a touch panel, which rapidly increases its demand for use in mobile terminals, it offers many benefits for manufacturers of mobile terminals in terms of reduced development costs and shorter lead time.

The explosive growth of portable multi-media players (PMPs), the enhancement of movie playing functions of mobile terminals such as PDAs and smart phones and the improvement of infrastructure environments for online distribution of movies etc., are all proof of the rapid expansion of the portable movie playing market in recent years. In addition, NEC LCD Technologies will begin selling another new 3.5-inch (8.9cm diagonal) QVGA amorphous silicon TFT LCD module, part number NL2432HC22-32B, which is suitable for portable GPS equipment, by the end of April, 2006.
