Tokyo, June 6, 2006 --- NEC LCD Technologies, Ltd. (NEC LCD Technologies) today announced that at SID 2006 in San Francisco it will give a presentation and demonstrate a sample of its new 3.5-inch (8.9centimeters-diagonal) color quarter video graphics array (QVGA, 240 x 320 dots) amorphous-silicon, thin-film-transistor (TFT) liquid crystal display (LCD) module boasting a viewing angle and contrast ratio of the industry's highest class for small liquid crystal display modules.

This new LCD module was realized by a combination of super-reflective natural light TFT (SR-NLT) technology, NEC's proprietary transflective technology for adapting objects to outdoor light, and super-advanced super fine TFT (SA-SFT) technology, proprietary high-visibility technology that employs wide viewing angle technology enabled by the horizontal electric field (or in-plane switching (IPS) ) method.

NEC LCD Technologies has succeeded in significantly improving the viewing angle characteristics and contrast characteristics of the LCD under the transmissive mode, both issues of conventional transflective LCD modules, realizing specifications of the industry's highest class as follows:

(1) A wide viewing angle of 170 degrees for all horizontal, vertical and diagonal directions
(2) A high contrast ratio of 500:1 (in transmissive mode) and high reflectivity of 15%

In recent years, the need for multi-functional portable information terminals has grown along with the advancement of a networked information society, and information terminals possessing two or more GPS functions, portable multimedia player functions, digital TV functions etc. are being especially sought after. As portable information terminals with GPS functions are used outdoors, securing high visibility in high ambient light environments is essential. On the other hand, high luminance, high contrast and a wide viewing angle are necessary features of portable multimedia players and digital TVs.

Although the coexistence of high-definition displays boasting high visibility and a wide viewing angle under strong ambient light has been greatly sought after, conventionally it has been difficult to combine transflective technology (for high visibility) and wide viewing angle technology enabled by the horizontal electric field method (for a wide viewing angle), without compromising both.

NEC LCD Technologies has succeeded in overcoming both of these conventional issues through the development of a new liquid crystal cell structure and optimization of an optical compensation system, making this new LCD ideal for use in multimedia terminals. It will continue to focus its research and development on the realization of displays with further enhanced features toward highly efficient multi-functional information terminals supporting a networked information society.

The new TFT-LCD will be displayed at SID 2006 at the Moscone Convention Center, San Francisco, USA, from 6 to 8 of June and will be discussed during the Late News Session on Thursday June 8, from 14:00 to 15:30, in room 135.
