Tokyo, October 18, 2004 --- NEC LCD Technologies Ltd. today announced the development of a 21.3" (54cm diagonal) amorphous silicon thin-film-transistor liquid crystal display ("TFT LCD") for professional use, which enables RGB 10-bit input/output and achieves high-grade grey scale performance and high-capability color analysis.

The main characteristics of this LCD are as follows:

  1. A 10-bit TFT LCD source driver, developed by NEC Electronics Corporation, enables individual RGB control of 1024 grey scales from input to output, and simultaneous display of over 1 billion colors. The 12-bit internal LUT (Look-up Table) enables selection of the most suitable one billion colors out of 68.5 billion. These features realize high-grade grey scale performance by minimizing the slipping (or missing) of grey scale, which frequently occurs during picture evaluation or analysis.
  2. Brightness of 235cd/m2 and gamut of 72% of NTSC are realized through NEC LCD Technologies' own unique super-advanced, super-fine TFT ("SA-SFT") technology, which boasts improved panel transmission ratio, and achieves a wide-viewing angle of 170 degrees.
  3. A wider screen size (21.3"), and high QXGA resolution (2048 X 1536 pixels) make it suitable for professional use, and its frame width of just 12mm is the thinnest in its category.

Recent technical trends and a rapid increase in digitalization call for improved PC CPU performance and increased storage device volume. In addition, professional users frequently attempt to adjust the gamma* value and/or color level of display devices during the data modification/filing process. This highlights the need for higher color analysis performance to match higher levels of data modification/filing required in professional fields such as computer graphics, digital photography, publishing/printing and the medical field. NEC LCD Technologies' new LCD module meets these demands boasting a built-in 12-bit LUT and RGB 10-bit input/output capability.

This LCD module will be displayed at "FPD International 2004", which will be held in Yokohama, Japan, from October 20 to 22, 2004.

NEC LCD Technologies will continue to strive to meet customers' needs, meet demand, and be a technological innovation leader through the supply of new products, which offer higher screen performance.

*: Gamma value represents the screen brightness against the voltage at each grey scale. Usually the grey scale level is adjusted by way of a sight check, but professional usage requires complicated picture processing, and is subject to operating environments (Windows or Macintosh).
