TOKYO, SANTA CLARA, Calif. U.S.A., DUSSELDORF, Germany, October 9, 2008 ---NEC LCD Technologies, together with its sales and marketing channels in the Americas and Europe, NEC Electronics America, Inc. and NEC Electronics (Europe) GmbH, today announced that samples of its new 21.3-inch (54 centimeters diagonal) amorphous-silicon thin-film-transistor (TFT) color liquid crystal display (LCD) module with ultra-extended graphics array (UXGA) resolution, part number NL160120AC27-22B, will begin shipping at the end of October. This module is ideal for medical applications such as the display of radiograms for the interpretation and diagnosis of health conditions.

The new color TFT LCD module achieves high luminance of 900 candelas per square meter (cd/m2), and may be adapted for medical X-ray image diagnosis through a combination of NEC LCD Technologies' proprietary ultra-advanced, super-fine TFT (UA-SFT) and a high-intensity direct backlight system. The new model also features a high contrast ratio of 1100:1 and significantly improved brightness (viewing angle luminance) when observing the display from an angle, which is problematic in conventional ultra-high-luminance color LCDs, which commonly lose a great deal of luminance unless seen from directly in front.

The main characteristics of the new module are as follows:

  1. Ultra-high luminance
The new product achieves ultra-high luminance of 900 cd/m2 using proprietary UA-SFT technology and a high-intensity direct backlight system that smoothly and precisely reproduces the grayscale images required for medical diagnosis. Furthermore, enhanced panel and backlight optimization has improved the display’s brightness from an angle, which allows information to be viewed more easily and accurately from a variety of standpoints.
  2. High contrast performance
An enhancement to panel and backlight design, including adoption of UA-SFT technology, has improved the LCD panel's ability to prevent the leakage of light, thereby improving the viewability of black images. As a result, NEC’s new product achieves a high contrast ratio of 1100:1, a 20% improvement over conventional models (part number NL160120AC27-20). Moreover, optimization of the optical design inhibits a "washed-out black" phenomenon that occurs when the viewing angle is enlarged--currently a common issue with in-plane switching-type LCD modules--leading to better viewing angle performance at higher contrast ratios.
  3. Ultra-wide viewing angle
UA-SFT technology also enables an ultra-wide viewing angle of 176 degrees by reducing color shift, which greatly expands viewing positions and the module’s suitability for multi-screen use.

Recently, the penetration of LCD devices in the medical field has been progressing rapidly. NEC’s LCD modules are recognized for their high image quality and ultra-wide viewing angles, and have been adopted widely by medical equipment manufacturers worldwide. Along with the spread of LCD devices in the medical field, the demands required from LCD devices have also become more advanced. Especially with the rapid progress of medical image processing technology in recent years, the need for color images from computer processing, such as "3D-CT" and "Fusion," for medical diagnosis is steadily increasing.

These factors contribute significantly to the expectation that demand for high-luminance color LCDs capable of assisting with a patient’s diagnosis--using monochrome, X-ray and/or color images such as 3D-CT and Fusion--will continue to grow.

"We are proud to deliver new products in response to growing market demands," said Hidetoshi Usui, department manager, product planning and marketing, NEC LCD Technologies, Ltd. "By optimizing our panel and backlight designs we have improved luminance to 900 cd/m2 and increased viewing angle luminance significantly. Our new module makes it possible to display medical images and information from a wide selection of angles, without causing undue strain on the eye, and assists in the diagnosis of medical conditions."

As one of the few LCD module manufacturers to meet the needs of the medical field, NEC LCD Technologies will continue to pursue even higher levels of picture quality in order to supply the best products available.

In addition to the new 21.3-inch LCD module, the company also offers a new 20.1-inch TFT monochrome LCD module, part number NL256204AM15-03A, with quad super-extended graphic array (QSXGA) resolution for digital mammography image interpretation.

The NL160120AC27-22B will be showcased in NEC LCD Technologies’ booth #4801 at "FPD International 2008," which is being held from October 29 to 31 in Pacifico Yokohama, Japan.
